Scottish Government Increases Legal Aid Fees by 13% to Support Access to Justice

Recognising the challenges faced by legal aid solicitors and the communities they serve, the Scottish Government has announced a significant 13% increase in legal aid fees, set to take effect from September 2026. This move is part of a broader initiative to strengthen the legal aid system and ensure its sustainability.

For solicitors dedicated to providing legal aid, this fee increase is a welcome development. Since 2019, cumulative fee increases have amounted to just over 25%, outpacing inflation. The most recent rise in April 2023 brought total additional funding to £31 million since 2019.
