Scottish Legal Aid Fees to Increase by 13% in September 2026

Starting in September 2026, solicitors providing legal aid will see a 13% increase in their fees. This adjustment is part of a broader initiative to strengthen the legal aid system and ensure that everyone has access to quality legal representation.

Legal aid is a crucial service that allows individuals who might not afford legal representation to receive the support they need. Over the years, there have been concerns about the sustainability of the legal aid system, with solicitors facing financial challenges due to stagnant fees. In addition to the fee increase, the Scottish Government is introducing funding for up to 40 Legal Aid Traineeship positions. Since 2019, cumulative fee increases have amounted to just over 25%, surpassing inflation rates. The most recent rise in April 2023 brought total additional funding to £31 million since 2019. These measures reflect a commitment to maintaining a fair and accessible legal system for all.
