Scottish Government Boosts Support for Women Leaving Abusive Relationships

4 August 2026

On International Women's Day, the Scottish Government announced a significant increase in funding to support women and children escaping abusive relationships. An additional £2 million has been allocated to the 'Fund to Leave' initiative for the 2026-27 period, aiming to assist up to 2,400 women and their children in Scotland.

Domestic abuse remains a pervasive issue, with financial dependence often trapping women in harmful situations. The 'Fund to Leave' provides immediate financial assistance for essentials like rent, transportation, food, and clothing, enabling women to leave abusive partners swiftly and safely. Since its launch in February 2026, the fund has already supported over 230 women and 300 children.

First Minister John Swinney emphasized the government's commitment to breaking down financial barriers that prevent women from leaving abusive partners, stating, "We are determined to break down the financial barriers that prevent women from leaving abusive partners so they can begin to safely rebuild their lives and protect their children from harm."

At Thompson Family Law, we recognize the critical importance of such initiatives. Financial constraints should never be a reason for someone to remain in an unsafe environment. This increased funding is a positive step toward ensuring that women and children have the resources they need to escape abuse and rebuild their lives.

If you or someone you know is experiencing domestic abuse, it's essential to seek help. The 'Fund to Leave' is administered by Scottish Women's Aid and local women's aid groups across Scotland. Women with no recourse to public funds are also eligible to apply. For more information on how to access this support, visit the Scottish Women's Aid website.

Remember, you are not alone. Support is available to help you navigate this challenging time and move toward a safer, healthier future.
