Scottish Government Increases Support for Foster and Kinship Carers

20 August 2026

At Thompson Family Law, we understand the vital role that foster and kinship carers play in providing safe and loving homes for children across Scotland. Recognising the challenges these carers face, the Scottish Government has announced a 3.8% increase in the Scottish Recommended Allowance (SRA) for the 2026-27 period, effective from April 2026. This adjustment aligns with the Consumer Price Index inflation rate recorded in September 2025.

Under the new rates, carers will receive weekly allowances based on the age of each child in their care:

This uplift is part of the government's commitment to 'Keep The Promise' to Scotland's care-experienced young people by 2030. The initiative aims to ensure that all eligible foster and kinship carers receive consistent financial support, regardless of their location. The SRA was first introduced in August 2023 to standardise the minimum level of support provided to carers.

Promise Minister Natalie Don-Innes emphasised the importance of this increase, stating, 'Foster and kinship carers do an extraordinary job in providing safe, stable, and loving homes for some of Scotland's most vulnerable children and young people. It is only right that the financial support they receive keeps pace with the cost of living.'

At Thompson Family Law, we commend this development as a positive step towards supporting those who dedicate their lives to caring for children in need. If you have any questions about how this increase might affect you or need assistance with related legal matters, our team is here to help. We are committed to providing clear, practical advice to support families and carers throughout Scotland.
