Scottish Government Proposes New Measures to Combat Violence Against Women

First Minister John Swinney announced plans to introduce a misogyny bill and launch a public health campaign targeting misogynistic attitudes among boys and young men. These measures come in response to alarming statistics indicating a rise in sexual crimes across Scotland.

Recent data reveals that the number of reported rapes and attempted rapes has increased by nearly one-third over the past four years, reaching 3,240 cases in the year leading up to June 2026. Overall, sexual crimes have risen by 11% during the same period, with a 9% uptick in the last 12 months alone. These figures underscore the urgent need for comprehensive strategies to combat such offenses.

The proposed misogyny bill aims to criminalize behaviors that perpetuate hatred and discrimination against women, sending a clear message that such conduct will not be tolerated. Complementing this legislative effort, the public health campaign seeks to challenge and change harmful attitudes by engaging with young males, promoting respect and equality from an early age.
