Government Boosts Legal Aid Funding to Enhance Access to Justice

Access to justice is a cornerstone of a fair society, ensuring that everyone, regardless of their financial situation, can seek legal redress. Recognising the challenges faced by vulnerable individuals, the UK government has announced a significant increase in legal aid funding.

From 1 December 2025, criminal legal aid solicitors will receive up to an additional £92 million annually. This investment aims to address longstanding issues within the criminal justice system, providing much-needed support to legal professionals and, crucially, to victims awaiting justice. In addition to the boost in criminal legal aid, the government is allocating £18 million per year to uplift housing and immigration legal aid fees. This marks the first major increase in civil legal aid fees since 1996. The funding is intended to support individuals at risk of losing their homes and victims of modern slavery, among others. The majority of these changes will take effect on 22 December 2025, ensuring that legal practitioners are adequately compensated for their vital work. Source
