Consultant Solicitor
Gary Thompson is a consultant with Thompson Family Law. Gary gained his LLB and Diploma in Professional Legal Practice from the University of Strathclyde. During Gary’s time at University, he was involved with the Strathclyde University Law Clinic, which provided free advice to clients who did not qualify for Legal Aid and could not afford a solicitor. Gary also holds a BSc in Computing and previously worked in IT and Marketing prior to entering the legal profession.
Gary has substantial experience in dealing with complex cases and regularly appears in cases as a solicitor against counsel (known as a barrister in England. An advocate who generally deals with the higher courts in Scotland). Gary has a particular interest in commercial and construction matters and regularly deals with construction disputes, debt recovery and consumer credit cases. Gary has been successful in defending liability for debts following on from assignation in all cases that he has dealt with to date. Gary also regularly advises clients on contractual matters, including avoiding pitfalls during assignations.
In addition to this, Gary deals with a number of complex family cases including financial provision on divorce, contact and residence (custody) cases, acquisition and deprivation of parental rights and responsibilities. Gary has an abundance of experience dealing with professional negligence, medical negligence and general civil litigation (including interdict, power of arrest, contempt of court), personal injury cases and Fatal Accident Inquiries, where Gary has recently had findings made on behalf of the deceased James Irvine in a Fatal Accident Inquiry into the facts surrounding his death.
Outside of work Gary enjoys socialising with friends, spending time with his family and sports; in particular football. Gary is also a very keen traveller and enjoys visiting different countries.
